By Walid

Walid al Damirji, a former creative director of London’s iconic fashion label Joseph and co-owner of London’s cult artisan bakery and choclatier Cocomaya also heads the clothing label, ‘By Walid’. Presenting a small range of special pieces, hand-crafted from antique, vintage and ethnographic textiles which range from nineteenth century Paisley and 1920s Chinoiserie shawls to French cotton crochet, beautifully worn linen, silk tulle, leather and recycled furs. Texture, colour and shape define his men’s collections and they fit into a category as yet undeveloped: ‘upcycled’ fabrics and garments from the past transformed – never adapted - into pieces with a modern sensibility. Working from his small atelier in a converted early nineteenth century mews house, everything is completely ‘hands on’ in a way reminiscent of the traditional tailoring houses of Savile Row. As with those establishments, the fabric is king, the ideas developed not from fashion’s whim but from an understanding how the material works on the body.
